Chapter Five

Their Journey Begins

They talked by the warmth of the fire until purple and orange streaks of the sunrise filled the early morning sky. The candles had burned down to nothing, but the house was warm. Outside, the deep, newly fallen snow blanketed the house and everything around them. For the rest of their first night, they shared their personal stories and cuddled on the couch.

Elora glanced out the window of the back door. She stood up and walked over to the view as she wrapped the quilt around her shoulders.

Brennen got up and approached her, cupping his chin as if he was in deep thought.

“Elora, you may think I’m crazy for asking this…”

“What is it?”

“I was wondering if I could offer you a job on my movie set.”

“A job?” She turned to face him.

“We could use an extra makeup artist, and it would give us a chance to spend more time together.”

“Me?” she chuckled. Elora looked at Brennen with disbelief. This was a big movie. They had talked about it half the night.

“You went to college for it, so you have the knowledge. It would be great.”

“Brennen, that’s a very generous offer, but I couldn’t possibly.”

“Why not?”

“I have a job, and a home. I can’t just pick up and leave. This project is the most important in your career. You can’t afford to take chances like that when you don’t know—”

“—Elora, you said yourself, my intuitions have been off. That’s because I didn’t trust my first instincts. Now, I’m connected, and that’s exactly what I’m doing, trusting my first instinct.”

“Brennen, I just couldn’t. Aren’t you even a little concerned that our—infatuation is clouding your professional judgment?”

“Not in the least. Look, first of all, I don’t believe what we have is simply an infatuation.”

“You don’t?”

“No, you know me better than people I’ve been around for years. I can be myself around you. Do you have any idea how rare that is for me?”

“I do, actually,” she confessed.

“Secondly, I don’t take chances or risks, on set or off, unless I know in my heart it’s a good choice.”

Smiling inside, she was convinced he’d lost his mind. Who wouldn’t want to be part of big movie production?

“Really, Brennen, it’s not…”

“Could you just take it into consideration? I don’t need an answer right away.” He smiled at her.

“I can consider it, but—”

“No buts. Just think about it.”

Elora stood at the back door as her head swam with his proposal, and then, she caught the most beautiful sight.

“Brennen, look.”

He slid his arms around her waist from behind. In front of them was the most breathtaking sunrise filled with layers of deep purples, pinks, oranges, and blues that melted into each color, just as one would see on an oil canvas.

The property was enveloped with the untouched fallen snow. The tree branches were all covered in a brilliant layer of ice and snow, glistening like crystal. It was magical. It was a peaceful scene, following such fierce weather.

Elora tried to hide her yawn with her palm so as not to alert him to her exhaustion.
